Of tho total IGS nro men, 100 women and 45 children. N.Z. DENTAL ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, April 7. At tin* annual meeting of the Now Zealand Dental Association, Mr G. Lawrence Taylor (Auckland) was elected Vice-President and President elect. Mr. W. W. Squirt's (Nelson), VieePresident hist year, succeeds to the position of President, for the coming year. Mr. K. C. Morpeth (Wellington) was re-appointed chairman of the executive. Mr. M. D. Mac Govern (Wellington) was appointed lion, secretary, and Mr. Maurice E. Deuniston (Wellington) lion, treasurer. It was decided to appoint Messrs A. M. Carter (Auckland) and C. W. Hay. formerly of Dunedin, as honorary life members of the Association, in recognition of the valuable services to the dental profession of the Dominion. FIRE AT KALITA. GR.EVMOUTH. March 8. A DRUG ADDICT. AUCKLAND, April 8. Bernard l.uks, 24, descrilied as a drug addict, pleaded guilty at the Police Court- to theft of various articles. including hypodermic syringes and needles ami two boxes ol morphine. while a patient at the hospital. He was sentenced to reformative detention not. exceeding two years, with u recommendation to the Prisons Board that ho hr transferred to W:ukeria. A SERIOUS CHARGE. AUCKLAND, April 8. A charge of negligently driving a motor-car in Rcmuera, Rood on the evening of April Ist., and thereby causing the death of Robert Thomas Pugg, was preferred against Andrew Donald in the Police Court. Accused was also charged with driving at an excessive sliced. Henry S. N. Robertson. who witnessed the accident estimated the speed of Dngg’.x ear at not less than 85 miles an hour. John S. Wells estimated the speed -at 80 miles an hour. Accused’s ear. which was .just in front of witness seemed to swerve towards the tramlines. He saw it hit the deceased who was then on the edge of the tramline. The right-hand side of the ear struck the deceased. Witness could not say it the dir went over the body which was thrown 12 or 15 vsmls. Witness entile, not say if deceased saw the car which pulled up about 50 yards from the point of impact. Alter further evidence the hearing was adjourned till next Wednesday. CHILD’S DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH April 8. Joyce Porter, six years, died at tho hospital this morning as the result of injuries caused through being knocked down by a cyclist at Islington. The police are investigating. MOTOR GARAGE FIRE. WELLINGTON, April 8. A fire at Petonc destroyed Whitton and Barber’s garage, along with a motor bus, Essex car. tools and fittings. A hoso had to be kept playing on the underground petrol tank to prevent a damaging explosion. Some injury was done to the shops adjoining. £OS was just spent on repairing the bus. I lie insurances are only £7OO and the loss is heavy. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. PALMERSTON N., April 8. Herbert Michael Bailey, a young man, allegedly conterned in an accident on the lUmgitikei line on the evening of March 22m1.. wliereuy Maurice Stewart, aged IS, subsequently succumbed to injuries, was charged on remand at the police court with negligently driving a motor-cycle and thereby causing the death of Stewart. Evidence similar to that 'at the inquest was given. Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial at the sitting of the Supreme Court next month. Bail was allowed. SEAMAN IN TROUBLE. NEW PLYMOUTH. April S. In the Magistrate’s Court this morning James Duff, a member of the crew of the steamer Tasmania pleaded guilty to breaking and entering the shop of Haller,stein Bros., and stealing ladies’ shoes and breaking a window valued at £l2. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. DUNEDIN MONEY BAGS. DUNEDIN, April 8. In reference to the large sum found in a right-of-way. the actual amount was £ 235. all in silver. It now transpires that a complaint was made that over £IOOO in notes was missing. This represents several days’ takings of various side shows at the Exhibition run bv Livingstone for himself and others. The money was not banked because of the holidays.
DEATH FROM INJURIES. WE LING TON, April 8. Ernest Livingstone, a seaman, aged 09, fell in the Post Office Square and died from the effects. According to the evidence at the inquest he was under the influence of liquor at the time. He fell suddenly backwards and struck Ills head on the roadway, fracturing his skull. AN ELECTORAL DIFFICULTY. AVELLINGTON, April 8. The point has been raised that visitors at Dunedin will unduly raise the populated of the South Island and affect the representation of the country districts, and also tile number of representatives which the North Island is entitled to when the electoral districts are automatically revised. The Government Statistician does not hold any hope that this can he remedied. In the British Empire, except Canada, the population is always counted in the ristrict in which it- is located when the census is taken. The United States, Canada and some other countries had a system by which those temporarily present are excluded and temporary absentees included, hut it is difficult to work, and not entirely accurate.
