SHIPPING DISPUTES

[Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.]

WATEREROUT TRO ÜBLE. .MELBOURNE, April 2. No settlement was reached at tho compulsory conference between the Commonwealth Steamship Owners Association and the Watersides l 1 tile ration, which was summoned by Mr Justice Powers, a.s cabled on the 27tli of March. The Registrar of the Court has issued a statement, whidk says that all the matters in dispute were discussed at length, but neither side would make concessions, and the conference adjourned. The employers maintained that the Union was committing breaches of the Act and Awards at a number of ports throughout the Commonwealth. Tho Union, in reply, contended that the men had taken matters in their own hands! Even, when the Genetal Secretary, who acted tor the Committee of Management, directed them to comply with the award, the men had refused to do so. The Union representatives also said that in eacli case tho men felt that the trouble arose because of tho difficulty in getting conferences with the employers. A suggestion was made that the conference should ho continued outside tho Court, but the employers said they felt that this could not be held, as tho men were not complying with the award. TOM WALSH EXPELLED. SYDNEY, April 2. Members of the Sydney branch or the Seamen’s Union decided to suspend Tom Walsh from the office of General President and from membership of tho Union, on the grounds of gross neglect of duty, wilful disobedience to instructions and to resolutions carried by members at stopwork and special meetings, also on account of his partaking in the formation of a union which had already been declared black. At the meeting Walsh was not present.
