The Kumara school children leave with the Greyinouth schools excursion o’n Tuesday next, for the Dunedin Exhibition. Jn keeping with the Government's decision to encourage local manufactures, it was decided some time ago to have the vast number of motor registration plates rec|iiired in the Dominion manufactured locally. An engineering firm in AYellington secured the contract for the work. Special machine! - was imported and set up, but difficulties occurred in the machine not working effectively. The Hon. It. E. Bollard announced on AA'edn/esday evening that the machinery was now running with fair smoothness, and that, the new plates would he ready for issue in the North Island on April 6, and in the South Island at near the end of the month.
The third annual meeting of the South AYestland Shipping Company,
Ltd., will be held at Hokitika on the 24th inst. at 8 o’clock. The directors’ report states:—‘ ‘The operations fey the year ended 31st March gave a cash'profit of £1 10 4s' phi. Of this, £49 has been written off the ship, and the balance has converted the profit and loss account from a loss of £O3 4s to a profit of £2O 0s lOd. It is regretful that the proposal submitted a year ago to install new engines in the boat was not adopted, as tile want of efficiency and heavy cost of upkeep of the present engines not only absorbs any possible profit, but wholly prevents a satisfactory service.”
