SHIPPING DISPUTES
[Australian it N.Z. Cable Association.] SHIPOWNERS’ STAND. SYDNEY, March 31. The coastal shipowners have announced that, although the seamen have declared the strike off, tho dispute still exists so far as the owne are concerned. They contend the seamen had only considered themselves in deciding to return to work. The owners must have some guarantee of continuity of service from the men. Otherwise matters would stand just ns they had been before the strike, and the owners would insist on tho formation of a new Seamen’s Union embracing the volunteers at present working the ships, with an executive altogether disconnected with the Federated Seamen’s Union. STRIKE OFF. SYDNEY, April 1. Tho Sydney branch of the AVatersiders’ Federation at its weekly meeting endorsed a motion by the the seamen in declaring off the coastal strike and instructed its own members that they were now free to present themselves for re-employment on the wharves.
