HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

TUESDAY, AIARCH 29th

The Committee met at 7 p.m. Present: Rev. J. F. Jack (Chairman), Messrs Richards, Redder, Wells, Ha.seler, Goodfellow and Conning (lion sec). •Tlie minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. IN WAR I) CORRESPONDENCE.

From Canterbury Board, notifying the acceptance of the resignations of Alias Peulingtou and Air "W. D. Reek. Received; letters of thanks to be sent to the two retiring teachers. From Department of Health notifying that Miss Sanderson, dental nurse, was being transferred to Christchurch, and Miss Ida Cocks would fill her position and take up the duties before Miss Sanderson left.—Received; a vote of appreciation of services was recorded. From Board notifying authority had toon given for repairs to South Spit school; stating the further amount of subsidy would he available when the expenditure authorised had been 'incurred; that when repairs authorised were completed the necessary pain Hug work would lie at once carried out.—Received as satisfactory. From Hoard forwarding a] plication of Harold D. Smith for position of assistant master at the District- High School, with a recommendation for appointment-, together with other application* for position.—Received. Air AVolls moved and Afr ITaseler seconded jfmt the appointment of Air Smith he reeomended. —Carried. It was resolved Lhat ilio Board he asked to invite applications for tho position being vacated by Aliss Penlington.

The Secretary reported that a suggestion had been made by a member of the Board with a view to the icntralisation of the South Spit school with Hokitika, school, the South Spit scholars to he brought to Hokitika by conveyance daily. It was resolved, after discussion, to comqiuiiic.ate with the Board, asking if the Board would favour the amalgamation of South Spit and Hokitika school, if the cost thereof was not. in excess of the present cost of running.

The Secretary. Afessrs Goodfellow and llaseler were appointed a committee lo reporl at next meeting on the building and repairing requirements of the year. The Rector (Afr Partridge) reported the attendance for the month averaged 901.2 primary and (10.1 secondary. with a. roll number of 320 and (II: Miss Peulingtou and ATr Bock had resigned having received appointments elsewhere; drill inspectors had paid an insjieetion visit to the school and reported a decided improvement in I lie drill. Inspectors Evans and Trivia had visiled Iho school last week. Tlii’ school excursion to Dunedin had proved a very successful one. The conduct of the scholars was good and the trip ns a whole was very complete and satisfactory; a donation of hooks foilin' school lihrarv had teen made by Airs Ailken; the rushes in the grounds had been cut: a complimentary reference was also made on behalf of the teaching staff in recognition of Hie services of Rev. .). F. .Jack as Chairman during the term.-—Received. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Rector and other teachers who took pari In the Dunedin excursion: a vote of ihanks was passed to Airs Aitken for her valuable donation of hooks. The Visiting Committee (Messrs Richards and Conning) reported only a lew minor requirements. .-Received. Air Wells expressed appreciation of the valuable services rendered l>v Air Jack as Chairman. He was sorry Mr • lack was going away. Tie had been a great help to the Committee and hwislted him and Airs Jack and family every .success. Air Jade said this would he the last occasion on which he would preside over the Committee. He thanked Mr Partridge for the good wishes of the staff. He regretted leaving Hokitika very much indeed, and one of the regrets would bo the leaving of the solum’ here, which enmnarcs favourably with others. I*i ■ wa- proud of the school and the work of its leathers. He owed a debt of gratitude to Aliss AVilson for the interest she had taken in his little girl. He congratulated the Committee on the fair amount of success they had achieved during their term of olllce. He thanked Afr AVeHs for his expression of good will and would lookback with groat, pleasure on his connection with the committee. He hoped the old members would stand for re-election and they had his hearty good wishes. The meeting then terminated.
