AUSTRALIAN FLOODS
PANIC STRICKEN CHINESE. NO LOSS OE LIFE. [Australian A N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received this day at 9.30 a. in A SYDNEY, March 20. The Macquarie River lias risen from the 33 feet to the 50 feet level.
AVelhiigton is experiencing the greatest flood in the district, which is a record. For the past nine days the rain aggregated 14J inches, whilo tho water, in places, is eighteen inches to two feet deep. The people are keeping the water from the main business portion of the town by building barricades of wood and sandbags.
There were many exciting and narrow escapes on the Bell River Flats. People were taken from their homes in boats. Terror stricken Chinamen were with difficulty, persuaded to leave their houses, some being taken from tho roof.
The water at the junction of the Macquarie and Bell Rivers is over a mile wide.
Many valuable imported stud at
mills are in danger. There have been no fatalities. In there have been heavy losses among; cattle and other stock.
