ARBITRATION COURT
WORKER'S MEMBER
WELLINGTON, March 22. Tlio Governor-General has appointed Mr A. L. Alonteith., of Wellington, to he a nominated member of the Court of Arbitration vice Air Hiram Hunter. Air Alonteiih will take up his duties on the Court at an early dale. The above is the only change m the membership of the Court, Mr \Y. E. Sill of Auckland, being re-appointed as acting or emergency nominated member for the unions, and Alessrs W. Scott, and B. L. Hammond .being the only persons nominated and -recommended as representatives of the employers to the respective positions ol nominated member and acting or emergency nominated member. The above- is the official notification issued by the Ini hour Department. Although details of votes cast by industrial unions are not being announced, Mr Monteith secured a majority and was, therefore, recommended for appointment.. Besides Air Hunter, who is sitting member, Air C. AY. R. Dixon, coal-miner, of Palmerston South, was also a candidate. It is understood that Air Alonteith will commence his duties when the Arbitration Court sits at Napier within the next few days.
Air Alonteith is the first Labour man from Wellington to be elected to the position of workers’ representative on the Arbitration Court. Air AI. J. Reardon sat on the Court in that capacity for a while, but he was not an elected member. He. was deputy-assessor, and succeeded Air J. A. Al’Ciillougli when the last-named gentleman resigned. Tlie. appointment of nominated member of the Arbitration Court is for a term of three years, and it carries a salary of £7off per annum.
