[by TELEGRAPH PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] FALSE PRETENCES. A SERLES OF CHARGES. PALMERSTON N., March 22. Described as a labourer, George Anderson, with several aliases, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to six charges of false pretences. The offences" were committed here and in Foxton between March 10 and March 10. Although the total sum involved was only £3 IB.s Gd, accused, according lo the police, had visited various establishments and ordered goods, afterwards obtaining loans on the representation that lie Wits the manager of a dairy factory. In one instance he visited the local undertaker's and ordered three wreaths to he sent to Rongotea, saving that his mother had died in Auckland, and was being brought down there for burial. Then he asked for and got a loan of £l. It was stated that on seven charges of a similar nature aL Gisborne he had been sent to gaol. The Magistrate imposed a sentence ol three- months’ imprisonment with hard labour on each charge, the terms to he cumulative.
A LUCKY ESCAPE. AUCKLAND, March 22. A sensational motor accident, occurred yesterday, when a single-seater ear. driven by Miss E. M. Simmonds, crashed into a plate-glass window at the top of Symonds street. While the ear was approaching the safety zone at the top of Symonds street from the direction of the City, it is stated that the accelerator became jammed. Gaining speed, the ear crossed the footpath at. the entrance to .Messrs Winstoue. Limited’s stables, and alien tile brakes were applied it skidded anil .struck the plateglass window of a fish shop, shattering it. It then rebounded towards the kerb again, and came to rest between two verandah' posts. It is very fortunae that no one was hurt, as there was a number of people on the pavement at the time. A ladv and two children. who were standing outside the shop, had a narrow escape from injury, as the car passed between them and the shop. Two wheels, the mudguards, and running hoard of the ear were damaged. It is believed that both the motor-ear and window were insured.

A surprise was experienced in the ■Wellington Golf Club’s championships in the defeat of A. I). S. Duncan in the second round by I). G. A byte. Duncan was leading in the first 13 holes by (i lip, but showed niter inability to putt in the second time round. Whyte winning one up at the thirty-seventh.

Tlie scventeeii-months-old daughter of Mr George Button, of Avondale, while playing on a sleeping porch, got Imr neck caught in a string hanging from a meat sale, and was partly sti angled. The child was admitted to the hospital in a- serious condition, but is now slightly better.
