CANCER PAItA POX. LONDON. .lan. 20. The aniii, a I report of the .Medical Research Council lor the year l!)24-2.i, issued yesterday, says that the work of Dr (iye and Mr Barnard ha.-; transformed the outlook upon the problem of the causation of cancer. Micros; opically (it is stated), a given j variety of earner in man. say of the skin, is the same as a cancer of the same tissue in a mouse, or n dog, or any other animal. The disease presents in tlnu respect a uniformity which is almost without parallel in pathology. Hitherto it has been found impossible to transfer a tumour from one animal to another except by implanting the living cells, and that even then cancers could he transferred only to animals of the same species, while at the same time nil cancers are alike. The evidence now brought forward by Dr Gye (the report says) resolves this great paradox. It suggests that the common factor for all malignant tumours is a filterable virus which alone is harmless in the absence of some other adjuvant factor. The microbe can he replaced by microbes obtained from other tumours and from other animals.

The demonstration of the truth of this is the essential feature of T)r Oye's work at this stage at least and so far as the general cancer problem is eoncerned.

The establishment of a definitely parasitic causation of malignant disease brings new Imp? to the prospect of gaining further knowledge.
