DUNEDIN, March 19.

The Dominion Amateur Athletic Championships opened to-day in good weather with a large attendance for a week day, totalling about 4000. The ground was in the best of condition, and there was no sun, and practical!) no wind, but heavy rain fell overnight. The outstanding attraction was Rose. He only ran in one event. lie did not turn out for the lOOOyards event. His energy was left for the three miles, but be did not lower his rctord. I lie sinprise of the race was Nalder. The champion scennl unable to shake him off and there was a splendid finish. One of the best performances of tho clay was that of Shirley, in the high jinny. Farrell was also excellent. Shirley cleared sft. 11 3-Sin. The same athlete passed the standard in me nop, step and jump by more than two ioet. Cabot in tbe three-mile walk got Sic only championship- won for Otago. .Morgan and Kalaugber ran a dead heat in the 120 yards hurdles. The cycle races provided good sport, while thn ladies’ events caused a lot of interest.
