Undoubtedly some motorists are reckless or incompetent, but that docs not absolve the railway authorities Jniiin responsibility for maintaining these unguarded deathtraps. Is it conceivable that if our railways were run by private companies Mich a condition of things would bo tolerated by public opinion or by the State? And why should the .'Railway Department enjoy special immunity in such matters ? Auckland “Star.”
