Reserved judgment, was delivered by Mr 0. R. Orr-AValker. K.A1... at Wellington, in the ease in which the Lower Hutt Borough Council proceeded against A, H. Rievwright and 1). Ryan for exceeding the speed limit of twenty miles per hour between the railway station and AA'akelield Street. Lower Hutt. At the hearing Mr Rievwright. on his own heliall, ami Mr A. Pore on behalf of Mr Ryan, submitted that the by-law in respect of the portion of the road under discussion was unreasonable and invalid. Evidence was given that recently, by resolution of the council, only motorists exceeding thirty miles nor hour on the road were to he prosecuted. “It seems.’' said the .Magistrate in giving judgment, “that at least six out of eight members of the council were in favour of prosecutions not being taken unless the speed of motorists was over thirty miles per hour. I am satisfied from the evidence in this ease, and from the fact that the local authority’s engineer has conic to the conclusion that it would ho unreasonable to enforce its own by-law, that the limit of twenty miles per hour is unreasonable. Therefore, I hold that the by-law ns it affects the portion of the road under discussion is unreasonable and invalid.”

It is now nearly n year since the Plunket Society commenced its activities in Hokitika, and its work is hy now generally known and appreciated. This is largely due to the careful and painstaking interest taken by Nurse Spring in the babies and mothers that have sought her advice. For the information of any who may not have heard of the workings of the Plunket Society we wish to make it known that it is a rule of the Society throughout New Zealand that the muse’s services are available free of charge to anyone who asks for them. No one need hesitate to ask for the nurse’s help—wliieli is most willingly given. All the financial responsibility is taken hy the local committee. At present the Plunket nurse stationed in Greymouth visits Hokitika once a fortnight. and the Hokitika committee lias to contribute ite share to the nurse’s salary. The Treasurer has received several donations from wellwishers and subscriptions from members, and it is hoped that the full amount required will he forthcoming hy March 31st., the end of the financial year, so that no public canvass will he necessary. In this connection we should like it to he known that five shillings is the annua] subscription for members, but donations, large or small, will he welcomed. No sum is too small, and the Committee feels sure that there are many in the community who will willingly assist the Plunket Society either hy becoming members or by sending a donation to its funds. The Treasurer (Mrs George Perry. Hall Street) will he pleased to receive subscriptions—if possible before the Committee meets again in a week’s time.
