At the wool sales there was a large attendance of all sections of the trade. A surprising feature was the support given medium crossbreds (all merinos) by French and German buyers, also a good Home Irndo demand. There was an excellent selection. All combining sorts were firm at February closing rates, with a tendency in sellers'' favour. Short, faulty and scon reds were more difficult to sell and occasionally wen' withdrawn, but prices have not declined. Of crossbreds, there was a good selection with all round competition and late rates were fully maintained. The Continentals competed keenly. A somewhat inferior selection of sconrcds and slips declined five per eent compared with February. Lambs’ wool met a good sale, merinos tending in sellers’ favour. Shabbier merinos and all crossbreds were unchanged. New Zealand (Taraia) former Laid to !5d made 1 7V< 1 to 1 Gd.
CANADIAN ERUTT TRIAL. VANCOUVER. March 9. The trial of fifty-three Western Canada fruit jobbers, and the individuals charged hv the Federal Government with conspiracy and illegal combine ended on Tuesday with the completion of the defence evidence. Several days will he occupied in defence and Crown addresses, and the judge’s charge to the jury. The trial is the lengthiest and most expensive in the history of eriniinal prosecution in British Columbia, lasting thirtv-iwo days. U.8..A. MINE TRAGEDY. NEW YORK. March 9. A despatch from Eeeles, West Virginia. states the known dead, through the mine explosion there, was increased In nine on Tuesday, when the rescue workers broke through the harrier of debris, and found eight additional bodies near the shaft bottom. The rescuers redoubled their efforts in the hope of finding alive some of the 20 others still entombed. POISON IN FOOD. LONDON. March 9.
