In the Flection Court at Greymouth yesterday Air Alurdoeli. counsel for the respondant quoted a decision of the Full Court reading from his typewritten notes, instead of irom the A olunie of the Law Reports. Air Joyce, counsel for the petitioner interrupted and questioned the accuracy of the notes that had just been read. Air Justice Ostler intervened and asked for the Volume of the Law Reports from which tlio extracts had been taken. On concluding his reading His Honour pointed o„f that the quotations were accurate to the letter. Air Joyce made no reply mid Air Alurdoeli then resumed his'argument, on the same lines, and what appeared as likely to have been nn unpleasant court interlude, passed off.
The country schools contingent for the Dunedin Exhibition from Westland will proceed from here on the 20th inst., accommodation having been ai-j-anged for in Dunedin from the 22nd. The contingent will include a section of the Convent school, Hokitika, as well as pupils from Waiho, Okurito, Kanieri, Koiterangi, Upper ami Lower Kokatahi, Humphreys, Ruafapu. Stafford and Awatunn schools. The lull complement to travel is now arranged for. As no male teacher has been secured Air R. Lynn will go in charge of the party and make the necessary arrangements on route. The lady teachers to go will he arranged this week, when school numbers are finally fixed. This will he the last party arranged tor, as there are no lurtlier applications to travel. In any case additional parties cannot be arranged for now till alter the Faster holidays owing to the congestion of holiday passenger traffic on the railways.
Tin. local bodies in the AVestlaiul group of the* Highways District conferred yesterday regardin'; the allocation of highway fees. 'I here were present representatives of the Westland County Council, Hokitika Borough Council and Ross Borough Council. After a general discussion it was agreed to allocate the pool collected on capital value, population and expenditure in maintenance. It was agreed also to support the appointment of one inspector for the district and one collecting authority, on terms to ha agreed upon later. Representatives of the Kumara Borough attended later when the position was explained, but while agreeing to the appointment of a district collector was not favourable to the basis of the proposed allocation. The representatives will now report to their respective local bodies and failing agreement among themselves the matter will he referred to tlio Magistrate to decide. The Westland County Council yesterday afternoon accepted the proposed allocation on its part. Now arriving from Nelson and Otago large consignments of peaches, plums, apricots and tomatoes. Hi the Election Court at Greymouth yesterday it transpired that quite a number of the application cards for enrolment which were in dispute affecting both . candidates, were aucsted by the same elector. This brought forth a remark from Air .Joyce that this elector had apparently been going round the district on behalf oi the Licensed Victuallers Association, and presumably was being paid by results.
Many in New Zealand will regret to learn of the death in New A ork on January dth. of Air S. R. Kennedy, ihe head of the Kennedy Family of -Musicians who 'have toured New Zealand on many occasions during the last quarter of a century. At the time of his death the late All Kennedy (with his wife) was living in New York, with his son. Air Laurie Kennedy (the now celebrated ’cellist, who has been associated with Air .John McCormack, the popular tenor for the last six seasons in Hu? United States). Air Kennedy, sen., took ill on Now A'enr’s Eve, was operated upon for gallstones the next day, and died five days later at the age of 73 years. The late Air Kennedy (who by the way was an unde of Aliss Daisy Kennedy the gifted violinist), was a direct descendant' on his mother’s xid,? of A iscount- Lord Admiral Duncan, Earl ot Cnmperdown. ITo is survived by hiwidow. Airs Bertha Kennedy, who arrived in New Zealand by the Niagara on .Monday, land went to join her two sons.
