Tlio Prime .Minister .stilted to-day that. in order to meet any possible fluet nations of public linanco, the Goveriiment had decided Lo appoint a Special Committee of Public Officers to investigate and report as to Departmental expenditure in the direction of economy and efficiency. The trade figures for 1925 .showed a less favourable balance and ho hoped that the drop in tile export values would not unduly accentuate the position, the tendency of imports to increase at a greater rate than our exports, however, merited a
new warning as to over importing, v, hicli. if continued, may bring about a reaction that will alloet the roicnuc. The present is a time for a review of economy, both in public atid |>rivato finance. ’Hie Special Committee Departmental heads will consist of the Public Service Commissioner, the S'ocrelarv to the- Treasury, the Chairman of the Railway Hoard, and the Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department. and it will report as to the working of the reforms that were recommended and adopted in 1921-22. The Committee will lie aide to estimate the value of the changes then in-lituted. and will also report as to further relonns ami improvements in i lie Depart mental control of finance.
