COUNTESS CATHCART. NEW (YORK, Feb. 23,

Some of the mystery in connection with the U.S.A. Government’s sudden decision to permit the Countess of Catheart to enter the United States has been cleared away, but no official information has aided in the clarification. It came rather through the observation of a series of developments that, in the opinion of observers, liavo revealed an intention to open the way for proceedings that will enable the Government to extricate itself incr.e or los s gracefully from a situation that has been too embarrassing to bo longer endured

New pro:codings, it is predicted, will eventuate at another hearing beforo a Board of Enqurv, which will exonerate the Countess by allowing her possibly unrestricted admittance to the country. NEW YORK, Feb. 24. It is stated that the Countess of Catheart has signed contracts with Karl Carroll for the production of her plav “Ashes” with herself as the leading lady, at a salary estimated at three thousand dollars weekly, with five thousand dollars advance royalty on her play. GREAT POLE VAULT. NEW YORK. Feb. 21. Charley Hoff, a Norwegian polo vaulter, cleared the bar at a height of thirteen feet four and one-half inches. This is a world’s record.
