Members of the staff of the Magistrate's and Warden’s Court at Hokitika met on Saturday morning in order to farewell Mr D. V. Whitlock, who is resigning in order to study at Selivyii College for the Church of England .Ministry. Mr 1,. W. I.ouisson (clerk of the rulin' on behalf of the stafT wished Mr Whitlock every success and made him a small present. Mr Whitlock suitably responded. Air J. J. King from the Patent Ollier, Wellington, took up the duties on Thursday in succession to Mr Whitlock.
On Saturday aftenoon there was a very large assemblage at the funeral of tlit* late Mr Francis Keenan, of liiinu. the town and country being well represented including many returned soldiers. The services at St. Mary’s Church and the graveside were conducted by Rev. Dr Kennedy, and a large number of wreaths and floral tributes were placed on the grave, including wreaths from flic Returned Soldiers' Association. At a mooting ;it tin- County Chambers on Saturday forenoon. .Mr Duff in tin- chair. arrangements wore made for the despatch of scholars to the Dunedin Exhibition. The scholars will be sent in hatches of forty, commencing with Hokitika school on (Ith .March, and a country batch the following Saturday. Other batches will be sent as arranged. The estimated cost of the trip is Cl per head. Alisx Wallace. Mrs Mnnson, Messrs Patridge, Swcney, Conning, Duff and Evans were appointed a sub-committee to organise the tour. It was resolved to apply to the High .School Hoard for financial assistance and Messrs Bruce. Duff and Evans were appointed town collectors. Country teachers are advised that funds raised locally may he used for their own children. The proposal is to leave on .Saturday, spend Sunday in Christchurch, proceed to Dunedin on Monday, have three days at the Exhibition :—-Tuesday. Wednesday, and Thursday and leave Dunedin on Friday on return arriving home on Saturday; eight days in all. Hokitika State School scholars will travel in uniform. The following numbers were handed in: Hokitika -10; Kanieri 8: Stafford 2. Kokatahi ", Woodstock 2. Awatuna 8. Ruatapu 3.
