AIR LINERS. LONDON, February 17. Sir Samuel lloare (Air Minister) speaking at Cambridge Aeronautical Society, said: “The Empire routes that I have constantly in mind arc London to Calcutta and London to Capetown, which some day will he in regular use. One small section has already been arranged for between Egypt ami India, beginning next winter. It will mean it saving of from live to eight days in the carriage of mails and passengers between Egypt and India. I hope this leads to an extension of the service to Rangoon and Singapore. Looking further ahead J am hoping commercial airships will make longer air journeys possible, and save two-thirds of the time between London ami Australia and -jrf New Zealand. I ask you to follow the great airship experiment closely and sympathetically. Our principle is safety first. We must not he blamed lor erring on the side of caution.”
THE UNFIT CONTROVERSY. f lON DON, Feb. IS. Rf. Rev. Bishop Barnes, of Birmingham, has by his niodernisfie speech made himself the centre of another controversy. Dr Arbutlinot Lane said that he was glad that the clergy were actively interested in a. reform which would gradually arrive through public opinion. He thought that more medical men, and al.su the educated classes were in favour of sterilising the unfit. It would be 1 ictter to segregate individuals who aro obviously unfit, and to exercise control.”

The Labourites are naturally jubilant over winning Darlington, following on their gaining Stockport in September last.
This contest was of the keenest. Tho seat has fleet) held by a member of tho Pease family for over thirty years, except for a few months in 1910. Rt. lion Arthur Henderson claims that the result is Labour’s most (leant victory during recent years.
