After a stormy day yesterday and last, night, (lie weather cleared and though the early morning broke threateningly. it cleared as the day wore on and t.F.e weather held up for the Westland A .and P. Association’s show which is taking place on the Hokitika racecourse this afternoon. The unfavourable weather conditions have militated against the entries and the attendance also. Tiie town observed a holiday for the. occasion, and the Municipal Baud was present on the course. Judging was taking place this morning but the results were not- a\ ailable before we went to press, and they will he published to-morrow.
The lieefton “Times” says on Sunday afternoon last three young children got into difficulties in the lnaugahua River near the Grey Road traffic bridge. Amongst those who realises* the necessity for prompt action was young Claude Newcomb. Without divesting himself of any of bis clothes he sprang oil the bridge from a height ol fifteen or twenty feet into the water and siiceessl ally brougot the childicu safely ashore. The lad is to be commended for bis pluck and prompt action, bv which the onlookers certify, a tragedy was averted.
Thanks to the interest and instrumentality of l)r Teichelmann some line additional photographic enlargements of Westland scenery are being despatched t<> the Dunedin Exhibition to he displayed in the Tourist Court. The enlargements are from 11 1 ,. Doctors’ negatives and have been made by tlv.’ Publicity Departments. The prints are 10 x :;:). all are being, mounted by Mr Ben Tlieim. The pictures are typical scenes of hush and glacier scenery on the main south road, and will he framed at Dunedin, and hung at the Exhibition. Bearing distinctive labels they arc sure lo attravf the attention of all who see them, and will no doubt he of inlerest to mnnv travellers passing through the Exhibition.
The quarterly meeting of Westland Lodge No. 8!) l .A.O.D. was held in the Lodge Boom last cloning when a fair attendance was recorded. The minutes of the previous meeting were read aml conlirmod, the outward correspondence read and approved, the inward read ami received. Banks reported sick members were doing fairly well. Sick pay to the amount of L‘(j. accounts la the amount of 2!) and medical expenses
to the amount of L'72 *s were passed for payment. A. ballot was taken for a new candidate who proved successful. A new member was also proposed for membership. The meeting then closed in harmonv.
Oil .Monday last Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, AI.P., telegraphed to Sir James Parr (.Minister of Education) asking him what assistance would he given by ihe Government to children of the nth and 'illi Standards on the West Coast, who desired to go to the Dunedin Exhibition. The Minister has replied as follows: -"Your telegram to hand. Recently a request was made by the Exhibition authorities for a stthsijl.v of £6(1(13 towards the transport ami maintenance of school children at the Exhibition but after full consideration the Government declined tlte application. Subsequently tlte authorities interviewed me at Dunedin, and promised to ascertain particulars from the
various committees of the numbers likely to travel and the cost from each district. On receipt of this information, I promised to investigate the malier further, but up to the present it has not tome to hand.”
Xo word has yet been received of the • -McKenzie llrothers and their party who have been missing for some months at Martin's Ray. Mr Seddon, M.P.. communicated with the Minister of Marine suggesting the sending of a search party from Westland, the party to include Air Cuttance, brother-in-law of the .McKenzies, who knows the country about Ala rLin's Ray and the Holylord River well. Al.r Seddon has received the following telegram from the Hon. (I. .1. Anderson (.Minister of Alarine): —‘'Your letter received. 1 am satisfied that the men who have gone from Queenstown to ascertain Che whereabouts of the .McKenzie Brothers and party know the country well. Mr Biggar, who has charge, having traversed it for a number of years. The police authorities tit headquarters consider it best to await the search party’s return before taking further steps, as the .McKenzie llrothers are most experienced men. and there is little probability of their having met with an accident or being losl.”
