CORRESPONDENCE.

A BAD ADVERTISEMENT

(To the Editor.)

Sir —I noticed on my recent visit here that steps wens being taken to arrange a scheme whereby the rivers on the main south road are to be bridged. It would be to the advantage of the district to have the streams bridged as soon as possible. In their present state they are a had advertisement for the district. This was brought prominently under my notice last week when crossing by steamer front Wellington to Nelson. I fell into conversation with two fellow passengers who intimated they were from overseas and were holiday-making. 1 asked if they had their Itinerary fixed, and they replied they Intel arranged their tour of the Dominion through a well-known Tourist Agency. T remarked that of course they would visit the Waiho Glacier, but to my surprise they replied in the negative, explaining that the agency had advised them not to go there as the road was uncertain owing to the want- of bridges, and many folk had been unable to g.?t through owing to the want of the bridges! I was surprised to hear this, and explained the position ns well as I could from my personal knowledge, but mv newly found friends said they had placed themselves in the hands of the Agency and naturally took the advice from that quarter. Here are two concrete cases of traffic being diverted from South Westland. No doubt there are others. The sooner the rivers are bridged and the bogey laid about difficulties of getting through the better—for Westland is suffering all thi“ time. 1 am etc.. M.C.
