A shock of earthquake was felt at Haunter at J. 25 on .Monday morning. It, was a gentle shake and came apparently from west to east.
The death took place on Friday afternoon in Nelson of Mrs John Oxhatn. senior, a very old resident of Murchison. Sim was married to Mr John Oxham in Westport in the very early days, and has raised a large family.

There was an attendance of about thirty parents at the District High School last evening when Dr Baker AteLaghlan of the .Health Department delivered tm interesting address on ‘'lnfections diseases, with special reference to diphtheria and its prevention.” The- lecturer was listened to very attentively by those present- and at the conclusion answered a number of questions put by some of tbe audience.
Seventeen eases of infectious diseases and four deaths, wore reported to the Medical Officer of Health at Christchurch during the week ended noon on Monday. Ihe deaths v.cie from enteric fever, tuberculosis, septic abortion and actinomycosis. Kaiata was yesterday the scene of a tragedy shortly alter midday, the victim of which, a young man named Alexander Muir, aged 21 years, was tumid shut dead with a double barrelled gun alongside. The tragic discovery was made by the mother of the deceased, who. on entering ids bedroom, found him lying dead on lii> lied, with a gunshot wound in th.o abdomen. The discovery was made at 2 p.m. 7he deceased, who is a native ol the locality, had not for some years been in robust health. Since he had an attack of
sleeping sickness some years since, his mind had suffered and he was subject to fits of depression. An inquest will be held to-day.—Grey ” Argus.”
Tl to .supplementary rolls for the triennial elections of the Licensing Committees throughout the Dominion closed on Monday. The law requires that the elections shall take place on the second Tuesday in Maii’i in the year following a General Flection, so that the 1 date thU year will he .March 9th. Nominations close on February 27th. Five candidates are required to ho elected for each licensing district.
No-License districts, of course, being excepted. There are 57 licensing districts in New Zealand. The franchise for Licensing Committee elections is very wide, being actually the same as at the General Election, but it lias become notorious that, lew ol those who ale entitled to vote avail themselves of the right to do so. Interest in Ike election i> eonmarativelv small. The
absent voting system in vogue at the Parliamentary Election is not operative in connexion with the elections of Licensing Committees.
