T.ORRY-OAYNERS FINED. PALAIERSTON N., Feb. 15.
At the Magistrate's Court, five owners of motor lorries were fined £2 and costs each for having caused motor ■lorries of a greater weight than five tons inclusive of tho load to be on tho main highway at Paremata when such loads were prohibited.
WIRELESS EXPERIMENT. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 15
Tho Edgeworth Radio Station, one of the most powerful in America, will broadcast a programme and make a special effort to get through to Australasia on Feb, 27th., from four to six.
ALLEGED INFANTICIDE. PALAIERSTON NL, Feb. 15
A single woman, aged 22 years, a domestic servant, w-as arrested and charged this -afternoon that on or about Jan. 19th., at Palmerston North she did murder her infant daughter. Accused had been resident in Palmerston North for some months, coming from the Auckland district. A remand was granted till February 17th., bail being fixed on her own surety of £SO. and one surety of a like amount. The Bench ordered the suppression of accused’s name in the meantime.
CYCLE- ACCIDENT. NELSON, Eel). 15. A serious accident occurred at Moittoka, last evening, James McGlashan. aged 80 years, while returning front Christchurch was knocked down by : bicycle at the Post Office corner, receiving severe injuries to the head. The injured man was conveyed to the Cottage Hospital. Tlie latest information revealed that the patient had not regained consciousness.
A CLERK’S SUICIDE. DUNEDIN, Feb. 15. Tlie police received word to-night of the death of John Wylie Sniiellie, of Mosgiel. Deceased was a clerk at the woollen mills. He left home in a motor c'ar yesterday morning, and as he had not returned at night, his parents communicated with the police, who on making a search, found a car at Whare Flat, four miles distant, on the roadside. In some scrub, a few yards away, the body of the missing man was discovered, with a revolver leside it. A FIRE AT SEA. AUCKLAND, February 15. The New Zealand Shipping Company, agents to the City of Norwich, which arrived from New York last Friday, announce that nil outbreak of fire occurred in number six poop hatch while the vessel was at sea, on February 4tli. The fire was quickly subdued, and it is thought that very little damage has been done. To cover any damage by fire and water, it will be necessary in the meantime for consignees to sign Lloyds’ general average agreements. The shin is loaded with case oil, motor cars and general merchandise for discharge at Auckland, Wellington. Lyttelton. Timnru, Dunedin and Newcastle. FAB HI TER (DROWNED KAIKOURA, Feb. 11. Constable Hodgson received information yesterday that a rabbiter named Andrew Gibson, about 45 years of age and single, had )i:en drowned in tlie Clarence river at Blulf Point, over the ranees from Kaikoura. Gibson had informed his mate that he would endeavour to swim the river, which is in flood. After getting into the swollen stream he was not again seen. Arrangements have been made to drag for the body at the first available opportunity.
OCEAN ISLAND RIOTS. AUCKLAND, Feb. 15. The warship Laburnum, which was despatched to Ocean Island last Deeemher in consequence of a riot between the Chinese and the Gilbert Island labourers employed in the phosphate industry, returned to Auckland to-day. She reports that the police force on the Island has been .strengthened, and that conditions are gradually approaching normal. Ten Chinese were taken to Fiji where they were imprisoned for theft and rioting. SWORDFISH CHARGES A BOAT. AUCKLAND, Feb. 15. Advice from Russel states that on Saturday, Colonel and Mrs Sparrow, visitors from England, had a. narrow escape in the launch Phyllis. They had a swordfish hooked. After playing it for some time, the fish headed straight for the launch. Colonel and Mrs Sparrow hopped out of tne road. The boatman saw what was coming so he gave the engine a little throttle, and the sword fish leaped right across the launch, broke the line and got away. Nine big game fish were caught last Friday. Zane Grey got three sword fish turning the scale at 2081bs. 2201b5. and 2341 bs. Mr Grey also caught a large brown shark weighing 7001bs. Nine big game fish were also caught on Saturday. Mr Sam Ludbrook (Gisborne) caught two sword fish weighing 211 lhs. and 2fi6lbs., and Mr Mason Payly (Orakawn) two swordfish of 232 lhs. and 2201b5.
