ROSE BEATS HAHN
WELLINGTON, February 14. The first appearance of the American athlete Scholtz, the Olympia sprinter, and Hahn, the miler, at Wellington attracted an attendance of close twelve thousand. . In the 100 yards event Scholz, scratch, won the invitation heat in 10 4-ssecs, Kyle (4yds) being second, Jenkins (ly<!) third. , . Fleming (54yds) and Murphy (oyds) won their heat. Tn the final, Scholz ran a great race the champion displaying a great burst of speed in the last twenty yards. He won doing the distance m 10 2-ssecs. This was good time, considering the track was not of the best and that he ran against a fairly strong wmd. Tn the 9t, 0 vards Scholz repeated his performance. He won his heat in 22 2-5 sees, Paris (4yds) being second and Jenkins (3yds) third. Murphy (14yds) won the second heat in 22- l-osecs. , Kerrisk (18vds) won the third heat in 22 2-5 secs. Tn the final Scholz, at half-way, appeared to he hopelessly ou of it From here lie made a wonderful effort passing all the others with an electrifying dash and breastedthc tape three yards to the good. Rose came again and passed Hahn, who.was partly blocked, and therefore could no get through. Halm was beaten out of ' l Priestly (50yds) was .second, and Cook (10yds) third. \s Rose and Hahn shook hands and proceeded to their dressing rooms, the himo crowd cheered and cheered again Barely, if ever, have there been such scenes witnessed on the athletic '.rounds or in the Dominion. " in the 440yds Hahn showed sportsmanlike conduct. Though this is not his distance, bo went out on the scratch mark, with Kyle, who after a. splendid race, just beat the American for second place. Fleming (on 14 yards) won the race by 10 yards, Kyle imd Hahn’s time was 51 3-seecs.
