FINED £25.

AUCKLAND, February 12. On New Year’s Day a man bought two nips of whisky, and later a bottle of whisky from the proprietor of a confectionary shop at Milford Beach. Because the purchaser happened to lit no other than Constable Waters (in

plain clothes at the time), the seller appenred at the Police Court this morning upon a charge ol selling whisky without being licensed to do .. so. Defendant, who pleaded guilty, and was represented by Mr B. Hart, succeeded in getting his name suppiossed. It was, stated Seagt. Calwell, that as tUe result of complaints being receiver l>v the police Constable A\ liters visited tiie defendant's premises on New Year’s Day, and bought two “nips” nnd later a bottle. One tiling in defendant’s favour was that no other whisky was found on his premises on a search being made, it was an isolated case, and there was no suggestion that the defendant was carrying on sly grog selling. He made no profit as the result of the sale of the liquor to tlio constable. Mr Hart said the constable approached the defendant V “with bis teeth chattering.” Ihe festive season was then at its height, and on being asked, defendant agreed to let the Constable have the whisky for about what he had paid lor it. T-ie bottle was wrapped up. and was bought by defendant for his own consumption. I-Te helped the police in every way and was sorry he had committed a breach of the law.' The defendant was fined £25 and posts.
