THE FOREST SERVICE
The latest publication issued by the Director of Forestry, as Bulletin No. 2 of the State Forest Service is an entomological one entitled “Forest and Timber Insects in New Zealand.” The author of this -work is Mr David Miller, Government Entomologist. The bulletin, which consists of 7G pages of printed matter and 169 illustrations, is set out in such a way that the contained information is available to all people interested in afforestation and the timber industry. Part one deals with New Zealand forest conditions in the past, lending up to the position of affairs regarding our present day forests and the insects infesting, them. Under the heading “The Process of Disintegration” the leading part t'hnt fire plays in the breeding of borers is explained, showing that fire-killed trees develop borers that- will attack milled timber. The extent to which Australian borers and other insects enter the Dominion on imported hardwood poles is stressed and also the general lines along which control of forest and timber insects can bo followed. Part olio closes with a section giving the characters by which insects generally met with can be re-
cognised. Part two deals specifically with 112 species of forest and timber infesting insects, set out in sections according to the part of the tree attacked. One of the sections of this part deals specially with borers and should provide informntion of value to builders and householders.
