A LONG NECK.

SYDNEY’S NEW GIRAFFE. SYDNEY. Jan. 28. Even the most dignified and circumspect of the Sydney newspapers cannot •oimelimes resist having a sly dig at M .‘loom no. The journal in question has a little crow this week about the Sydney Zoo’s latest acquisition—a giraffe. It says, inter alia, that while

me Taronga Park staff cannot yet boast of having two giraffes unde their care, the can take pride in 111-? reflection that they have one which “simply towers over Mclliourne’s solitary specimen, long grown decrepit with ag?. In truth, this latest arrival is a splendid specimen, albeit ho is only a colt of three years. There is herefore plenty of time for him to add to his 12ft. stature. Speculation as to how the long-iveeked animal would be handled in transit was set at rest by his arrival at Sydney by the sight of the crate in which ho travelled from the Northern Rhodesian veldt. The crate, however, was only Oft. 3in. in height. Had it been higher it would have been impossible to have brought the animal through the railway tunnels on the way down to the port of shipment. But when it was taken on hoard the steamer, a canvas-covered window at the top of the crate was opened, and the giraffe, who. during the railway journey had to keep its head down, was able to get the kink nut of its neck.
