BUILDERS’ FEDERATION

YEAR’S BUILDING OPERATIONS

The New Zealand correspondent of the “Australasian Builder and Furnisher” reports as follows on the year’s operations: The experimental labour legislation introduced by the Right Ron. B. J.

Seddon. and carried on with few alterations by his equally sturdy and capable successor in office, but opponent In politics, the late Right Hon. AY. F. Massey, is still in force. Alible our Arbitration Court has wide powers, it rarely upsets or alters a derision arrived at in the Conciliation Council. At our Conciliation Council 90 per cent, of our labour troubles arc settled, and we invariably strive to come to a- complete agreement there, if possible. P.cfore proceeding to take any action with either Council or Court, wc have a round-table talk with representatives of the unions affected, at our Builders’ Chambers, sometimes coming to a complete or partial agreement before proceeding in the way required by law. AYe have not had a strike in the building trade in my 25 years’ experience in New Zealand, which speaks well for the value of conciliation, as carried out by us. Neither have we had to invoke the assistance of the legal profession in settling any of our disputes. AA'o jealously guard our rights to deal with labour matters in a practical common•rmso way. without obstruction from bewildering legal argument. A YEAR’S CONSTRUCTION.
