SIR J. ORIC'HTON-BROAVNE OX REST FOR BRAIN. LONDON, December 8. Sir .lames Oriehton-Browno, lecturing on •• Brain Rest ” at the Essex Hall. Essex Street, \Y.C.. last night, gave the following scale showing the correct number of hours which should ic spent in sleep daily: At birth: 24 hours. Three months: 20 hours. Six months: IS hours. From 1 to •"> years: Id houis. From •"> to 10 years: 12 hours. From 10 to 13 years: 11 hours. From 13 to 30 years: 0 hours. In adult life: 8 hours.

Activities, bodily and mental, said Sir James, should he allowed to subside gradually, and there should be no forced work for a couple of hours before bedtime. Sufferers from insomnia should remember that, short of actual sleep, there were curious sub-somnolent states that were very restful to the brain. Tt might he laid down as the general rule that it was in the first part.of the night’s sleep that the products of fatigue were most rapidly removed from the brain.
