MAIN HIGHWAY BOARD AT REEFTON.

-fhc members of the Main Highways Hoard were accompanied as tar as Hccfton by several representatives ot ilie' Grey County Council. An inspection was made oi the mam hi'diway in the northern part of the County, and it is understood that the Board was sympathetic to all the requests brought forward by the Grey Coiiutv Council. Cpon arrival at lleefton the Board was met by representativs of the Inammhmi County Council. The raising of the Council’s contribution for the maintenance ol the Main Highwavs within the county from £39 last year to £l4O for the present year was vigirouslv protested against. After hearing the Council’s side of the case the Board’s chairman (Mr I’. \Y. Furkert) pointed out that the Tnaugalmn Count/ Council was exceptionally well-treated by the Board, and need ' not expect much better treatment in future as far as the Board wa< concerned.

Mr A. E. .Tull asked the representaiivex of the Council if they had any other offer to make, and when they replied in the negative Mr dull remarked that it appeared to him as if the fnuugahua County Council was oulv playing with the idea of local Government, adding that it would he to the Council’s advantage if they were absorbed by some neighbouring local body.
