The Guardian And Evening Star, with winch is incorporated the Mist Coast 'limes. FRIDAY. JANUARY 29th, 1926 SCENIC RESORTS

Wksti.a.mi cdiiliuiie.s to be out ol the pielure rather m the advancement <d its seei.ie resorts by the Government responsible for the I m l liernneu of Midi places with the public. Very little punI icily is gL on to Westlaml resorts, yet ut her centres more fort unnlcly placed reieivc special attention with all

classes oI advertising. And the di.-,-Irict lias not. failed to help itsoll" over many years in the niitlUT nf iisclul advertising. Various very creditable booklets lia'c la'i ■ll published at considerable ilist, in fact the publications rank among the best cireniated in flic Dominion. The expenditure of late years lias been more substantial still. Colli local bodies and organisations, as well as private enterprise, have holpcd with regard to grealer publicity, and ibis should have induced some response from the Government Department. Cut the district is ignored ttt more than one direction, and suffers in consequence in toe ability to draw a larger hulk of travellers and holiday makers this way. There is some satisfaction in the position that those who travel this way are pleased invariably with the holiday jaunt. They see sights and enjoy a variety of scenes, which no other part of the Dominion is capable of providing within the time devoted to a Westland tour. If the same care and attenton were devoted to lotal resorts as is meted out liv the Tourist Department to well-known places in both Islands, Westland would he not only better "known as a tourist resort, hut its attractions could he made even more notable. Tours could be extended, and the variety of the resorts better enjoyed. There is so much lake, bush and glacial scenery in such varied setting,s, that- the tours by file diliercut routes w»uld become more and more popular as the comfort and convenience of the travellers were studied at the different localities. Tit the south where local enterorise is entering so well, the hulk of the 'traffic gravitates, but there are other beautyspots about Westland which would be patronised equally- well were similar enterprise to he shown in catering . for visitors, and featuring local walks and other attractions in which holiday makers could pass a pleasant lime. Our scenic resorts need to be taken thoroughly in hand to get full value out of their natural attractions.
