THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Cardinal A 1 KltCllSlt. Ihe death of Cardinal Afereier removes one of the figures of the war whose greatness has not lieen diminished by time. When the occupation of Belgium began lie told the. German Governor-General that he was the representative of “a usurping and hostile nation in whose presence the Belgians asserted their right to independence.” When the occupation ended 50 months later Baron von der Luncken, head of the Political Department at German Headquarters, presented himself at Archbishop’s House and handed the Cardinal a Note liegiiiiiing with, these words: “You are. in our estimation, the incarnation of occupied Belgium, of which von are the venerated and trusted Pastor. For this reason, it is to you that the Gov-ernor-General and my Government also have commissioned me to come and to announce that when we evacuate your soil we wish, to hand over to you unasked and of our own free will the political prisoners serving their time either in Belgium or in Germany.” Those two quotations tell the Cardinal’s storv.—“Lyttelton Times.”
