TRAIN AND CAR

COLLISION ON A HAH [JR A BE IDC

About 12.99 o’clock yesterday afternoon there was a very narrow escape from a fatality on the northern end of Arahura road and railway bridge. It appears that Mr J. D. Lynch the well known merchant of Greyinouth, with a buslnnan Mr AV. Barnett as passenger, was coining from Greymouth to Hokitika in a Ford motor car. The car on reaching the Arahura bridge turned to cross the combined road and railway bridge, when lie saw a train just a. few yards away coining over me bridge. There was heavy rain falling at the time, and tlm sight of the engine was the first intimation of its approach. Almost immediately there, was an impact between the car and train, though the engine driver pulled up his train in remarkably quick time. The car was badly smashed, but the two occupants escaped very luckily. Mr Lynch received a cut on the nose, that required four stitches, while Mr Barnett received a cut on the hack of the head that had to receive three stitches. Otherwise they escaped any serious harm, beyond .the shock at their very narrow escape from further injury.
