OCEAN MAILS BY ’PLANE.
LONDON, November 30. With the assistance of the Italian authorities, an experiment is to lie made with a new liner, the Saturnia, which is to lie launched next month, in expediting ocean mails .by despatclw ing them shoreward by seaplane while tlie slop is still some distance from her destination. 4he Sa tin'nia. one of several new Italian vessels which are to ply between Naples and New York, is being fitted with a launching platform, and will carry several seaplanes of a folding type to facilitate their storage witnin her hull.
When about 1.000 miles from New York, it is proposed that the Saturnia should launch, laden with urgent mails, a ’plane which will fly ahead of the liner and reach its destination in about eight hours. Italian military men are to act as pilots, and trials are also to lie made in sending ofi a ’plane from a shore station with late mails to overtake the liner when she is some distance out at sea. Bv such terminal accelerations it is reckoned that several days will he saved on the ocean transport of urgent letters.
