CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. I

The Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch. Present: Messrs T. Hughes (chairman), TV. P Spencer, H. J. Bignell, R. Wild, C. S. Thompson, E. H. Andrews, J. Maze TV. H. TVinsor, G. TV. Armitage, TV. A. Banks, and J. G. Gow.

The Appointments Committee reported that additional information having now been received in connexion with the opening of a school at Evan’s Creek, it was resolved to apply to the Department for permission to establish it.

A circular letter was received from the Auckland Board, which asked for support to its representations that married teachers should not be appointed when their •husbands were able to support them. It was resolved to reply that the Board was quite in sympathy with the Auckland Board, and that as a matter of fact it had Imcn acting on th.is principle, considering that the Act gave it ample powers to do so. A letter was received from the Canterbury School Committees’ Association. suggesting a conference on the subject of Junior High Schools. It was resolved to reply that the Board would co-operate at any conference, and considered it essential that tbe Director of Education should lie present at any discussion. Messrs Hughes, Banks, the City members, and tbe Senior Inspector were asked to represent tbe Board.

A letter was received front the Department advising that there was no foundation in fact for the newspaper report that the Minister had now agreed to pay one-half of the cost of heating installations in existing schools.

It was decided that a further letter be sent to the Department urging it to finance the heating of existing schools on a. £ for £ basis.

The Appointments Committee reported that a letter had been received from one Department stating that there did not appear to be any legal barrier to teachers taking outside employment, provided that school duties were not interfered with. Appointments confirmed included: — G rev mouth, Mr D. M. Shirley, headmaster; Koiterangi. -Miss J. S. Sloane, sole teacher; Aloana. Miss E. J. Poiuton, sole teacher; TVallis Siding, Miss E. D. Butler, sole teacher.

Resignations received and accepted included:—Greymouth, Miss N. Hopkins.
