The New Jealaml Swimming Championships were commenced in the Napier Municipal Baths on Saturday night, before a very large attendance of spectators, the whole available space being occupied. Competitors, in ■satisfactory numbers, attended from all parts of New Zealand. Very keen interest was taken in the swimming, which in practically all events was of a high standard. The 100 yards men’s championship final provided a great race, in which N. Dowsett (Wanganui) not only defeated the holder of the record time and the championship (Adamson), but. dipped two-fifths of a second oil' the record.
In the 75vds intermediate girls’ breaststroke, Miss •). Whytnan (Wanganui) swam a splendid race and equalled the record. The intermediate boys’ 220 yds was won in good style by 0. Bridson (Auckland), who covered the distance in three-fifths of a second over the record time. The detailed results are as follows: 109yds Men’s Championship:— First Heat.—A. Adamson (Auckland) 1, D. Lindsay (Canterbury) 2. L. Fair gray (Auckland 3. Won bv two feet. Time 59 1-5 secs. Second Heat.—N. Dawsett (Wanganui) 1, D. Sutherland (Canterbury) 2, J. Cameron (Wellington) 3. Won easily by five yards. Time 59 2-5 secs. Final.’—Dawsett 1, Adamson 2, Fairgrav 3. Won by half a yard. Time 58 3-5 secs. 100 yards Ladies’ Championship: Miss E. Stockier (Auckland 1. Miss J.
