A miner, named Jack Brown, met witli a fatal accident while working in the north-east section of the Aline I Creek workings, Alillerton. yesterday, lie and his mate had just fired a top shot, and they were trimming the coal, when some coal fell and caught deceased on the head, breaking his neck. Deceased was a popular worker. The Check .Inspector had just visited the place prior to the accident. Air A. It. Green, examiner of motor drivers, will visit Ross th-morrow afternoon, and Harihari to-morrow evening and Saturday forenoon. On Saturday afternoon Air Green will he at Alatainui to examine applicants for drivers’ licenses. As this will ho the last visit south of the examiner possible for some time, those requiring licenses should avail themselves 'of the opportunity.

The visiting picnic excursions slur this week with the Runanga folk, and will bo followed by Greymouth Wharf Labourers and Blackball Schools on consecutive Saturdays. Next Wednesday the Greymouth Trades Picm takes place. Lake Afahinapua being the rendezvous. Probably if suitable train connection is provided from Hokitika, many local folk would like to join lithe outing also. Lake Alahinapun i* an ideal picnic ground.
A Gisborne telegram records the death last night of Air Vincent Fyke. 78 years of age, a well-known hanker, who came some years ago retired frojn llie service of the Bank ol New Zealand. lie was a son of the late Vincent Pyke. AI.P, Deceased was stationed for some years in the South Island, including Rnkaia and Gore, and was for many years manager at Gisborne. His wife predeceased him twelve year' ago. Fie is survived by two soils and a daughter.
Some months ago we relorred to tindisreputable stati- of the chairs placed for use of applicants at the meetings of the AVesthunl Land Board. A esterday. only one chair had an unbroken seal and it was learned that though application had been made to headquarters for the necessary repairs to be elfected. and the Public Works Department has been relerred to lor attention nothing lias yet been done. ’I he present condition continues to be a disgrace, whoever is responsible therefore.

The statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the recent .Midsummer .Meeting was submitted. This showed a substantial credit balance, and was adopted as satisfactory. The Programme Committee was instructed to draw up a programme for the Autumn .Meeting with stakes aggregating £7OO. to include two harness trotting events. It was decided to fall in with the proposal of the other West Coast .Racing Clulis and engage Air R. K. Hatch as starter for a period of two years. The Secretary was instructed to write to a ’Wellington journal and ask for the name, of the informant who supplied an untrue report of the Stewards’ action taken in regard to the Second Hurdles Handicap. The passing of accounts for payment concluded the meeting.
The death occurred at his residence, Cronadun, on Monday evening, of one of the district’s oldest and most respected residents. Mr John Brazil, at the ripe old age of 93 years. The deceased had been in failing health for some time past, and for the past three months was confined to his lied. He became unconscious on Saturday and gradually passed away, dissolution oooccurriug Monday evening. The late Mr Brazil was a native of County ’Waterford. Ireland, and had been about fid years in the Dominion, of which he had lived oil years at Cronadun. Previous to taking up land at Cronadun .Mr Brazil followed the gold rushes, and for about six years worked on the Coast fields with varying success. He was pre-deceased by Mrs Brazil nearly 12 years ago, hut leaves four daughters and two sons, the latter being Mr John Brazil, of Christchurch, and Mr Garrett Bra-zil, of Cronadun. The daughters are Airs Fox, Cape Foulwind ; Mrs Adams. AVaitahu; Mrs Groweott, Cronadun; and Mrs Hagan, .Murchison. A meeting of the Committee of the Inangahna Trotting Club was held on Monday evening. Air A. T. Brooks (Vice-President) in the chair, when the statement of receipts and expenditure of the recent meeting was laid before nimbers. This showed the Club to have made a loss over the meeting of £l2O 17s 2d. The Secretary placed before members the details of a scheme put forward by AH G. S. Simpson, of the New Zealand Referee, to secure permission to bold tbe Club’s next meeting on tbe Greymouth Trotting course, and lie (AH Simpson) would arrange for a first-class trotting borse to come from Christchurch and attack a record ns nil additional inducement. Wavs and means of meeting tbe deficiencv in the Club’s finances were discussed. and it was decided to ask members and others to subscribe to debentures carrving interest at 10 per cent, to the amount of tbe Club’s liabilities, and a sub-Committee was appointed to wait upon townspeople for their assistance and co-operation. Debentures to tbe amount of £37 were subscribed in tbe room. The accounts were passed for payment when tbe funds were available. The Inangahun Silver Band wrote expressing regret at tlie non-financial success of the meeting, and requesting the Club to accept their services as a donation. The Secretary was instructed to write the Band a letter appreciative of their generous offer.
The Afunicipl Band will render a programme on Sunday afternoon next commencing at 3 p.m. The numlier of motor vehicles registered up to December 31st in No. 12 District (Buller, Grey, Inangah'ua and Westland) total 1674. A special meeting of the AA estland County Council "ill be held on Jan. 27th. at 4 p.m. to prepare for visit of lTgihways Board, and meet Board in the evening.
