MAIL VAN ROBBED.

IN DUNEDIN STATION YARD

| A GOOD HAUL MADE.

[3T TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

DUNEDIN, Jan. If). A robbery occurred here some time between Saturday and Sunday last, when a mail van was broken into and rifled in the railway yard. The police are inclined to attribute the robbing to amateurs or possibly boys who were well acquainted with ihe conditions, and took advantage of them to ride the van. It appears that the postal van stood in what is known as tho “Chaff Siding” until 10 o’clock on Saturday evening, and was then shunted out to the centre of the yard, after being loaded with two trucks of parcels and other mail matter. One contained mail matter for Christchurch, and the other for Lyttelton, to be attached on Sunday evening to ihe 9.30 express goods train. The Railway and Postal authorities are reticent about the theft but it is authoritatively stated that the van was tampered with at Dunedin and that the pillaging occurred whilst the vail remained in the yard here. It is understoid that a good haul was made, but the authorities are not in a position to give an estimate ol the value of the articles stolen. So far no arrests have been made.
