11. A RSH ALL SENTENCED. [by TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND. January 20. At the Supreme Court Air Justice Stringer sentenced George Joseph .Marshall, to five years for assault with intent to rob on the night of November sth. .Marshall waited for the manager of the Newmarket Branch of the Auckland Savings Bank and presented a loaded revolver at him. On behalf of Marshall Air Reedy pleaded that Marshall had a blameless life for sixty-one years. He previously had been manager of the Ponsonby Branch of the Bank, whose employ he left owing to failing health five years ago. Since then -Marshall lias helped financially two sons to the extent of £I.OOO and their failure resulted in the breakdown of his lienlth. Te Judge commended the courage and promptitude of the manager in rushing the man. who had a loaded revolver and which saved the bank the loss of a large sum of money. Robert Ruff, on five charges of false pretences, received three years’ imprisonment and was declared an habitual criminal. The Judge characterized him as an impudent swindler and referred to the people whom he had tricked out of £OOO as simpletons. A youth, aged 20. described as the son of a wealthy Whnngarei man. was allowed three years’ probation for the theft of £OO from, a hoot shop.
