HJW LINOLEUM !S MADE COTTON FAURIC AND OIL. Although everyone knows that linseed oil is used in paints, few people realise that almost all the brightly coloured and serviceable linoleum sold today consists of a solidified form of this same oil secured to jute canvas.

In the process of manufacture, which usually occupies several months, boiled linseed oil is periodically poured over hanging strips of cotton fabric, and allowed to dry. The hardened films ot linseed oil thus obtained are removed, thoroughly kneaded with “filling” materials, such as powdered wood ana cork, together with colouring substances. and the composition then melted and pressed upon a canvas fabric. The resulting linoleum is then printed with suitable coloured designs. Inlaid linoleum is not printed but is prepared from various coloured linoleum compositions, which are pressed upon the canvas backing according to the design desired. Linoleum is very suitable as a floor covering because it has strong germicidal powers; it is capable, particularly immediately after being moistened oy washed, of destroying most of the germs and organisms which may settle upon it.—“ Textile Chemist.”
