ATTEMPT TO SWINDLE. WELLINGTON, January Ft. An unusual prosecution arising out of a bet with a bookmaker was taken in the Magistrate’s Court, when J. A. (."argent was charged with making a mark on an envelope resembling a stamp. The circumstances were that accused wrote to a bookmaker in Christchurch, informing him that he would he hacking a certain horse at the Hawke’s Bay races. Accused was called away from home, and during his absence the bookmaker telegraphed to him to forward £o to put on the horse. Accused did not receive the message till lie returned home, which was after/ the meeting had been held. He on-1 closed to in an envelope, and posted it I to the bookmaker from Wanganui, but I reproduced on the envelope a. cop> of the stamp of tlie Raetihi Post Office, which made ir appear as though (he lot lor had been posted before the rare meeting had been held. The bookmaker observed two Post Office stamps, and complained to Post Office officials, with tlie result that, flie bet was dishonoured. Accused, who pleaded guilty, was fined £lO.
