A meeting of the Westland branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association will be held in the County Cliamers to-morrow (Tuesday) evening at i. 30 o'clock to arrange for a deputation to wait on the Highways Board.

On Sunday evening of last week, Air W. H. Batson, of tile Commercial Hotel, Kmiiarn, reported the loss from bis office of a deeds box, containing besides a number of valuable papers, over £-10 in cash. The loss is serious for Mr Batson, who has placed the matter in the hands of the po!iec_
The Dominion’s quinquennial census will be taken on Wednesday, April 21 next, the count relating to the number of inhabitants domiciled the previous evening. The last census was taken for the night of April IT, 1021. It is not vet known what the composition of the questionnaire will he hi this occasion.

The weather on Saturday morning early was very viol, some heavy showers falling, ft cleared as the morning wore on but there was a small shower at noon. From then on the afternoon was line. A find of a nugget of gold, weighing two'ounces nine dwt, by Mr Rasmussen, is reported from tile .Moonlight district. The gold is a very ruggei. piece, nearly two inches in length, and oval in shape. A piece of rich-looking quartz carrying visible gold was afs.. discovered by Air Rasmussen in tin same locality. The .Moonlight district Ras been the location in past years of the discovery of many valuable nuggets. Two gold-diggers, over a quartei of a. century ago, unearthed one oi the richest pieces of gold ever fount, on the West Const in the same locality. The theory of experts is that Hie nuggets have become detached from a ric. quartz reef, hilt where the reef is located is still one of the many mystorie associated with the hidden treasui The Hon. W. P. Reeves in the course of his reply at a reception given at 'Greymouth on Saturday said Westland was unique in the world in the incomparable beauty of its sccenerv. He had seen many parts of the world, hut did not hesitate to place Westland first. The drive to Waiho, and the Franz .Josef Glacier could not he equalled in Europe or North America, in his opinion. A wedding of more than ordinaryinterest took place oil Saturday afternoon at Kumara, the contracting parties being Mr'Jack Steel, the wellknown All Black footballer, and- second son of Air and Afrs James Steel, of the Golden Eagle Hotel, Grcymouth, and Aliss AL Johnston, daughter of Alls H. Johnston, of Kumara. Early residents of Stafford and Hokitika will be interested to learn, of the visit to Hokitika during the past few days of Air John Murphy of Alelbourne. As a lad he came with his people to Stafford in its very early days, mid later came to Hokitika where he resided till 1878 when ho made his way to Melbourne where he has since resided. .Mr Alurpliy haslieen busily engaged in looking up old friends since his arrival.
