DUNEDIN BUSES. CITY STANDS IN DISPUTE. DUNEDIN, January 13. In consequence of the heavy Exhibition traffic, competition among motorbuses has been very keen. Some intersetiug sidelights of the position were given publicity at the Police Court yesterday, when Henry Lister answered a charge to tlie effect that he plied for hire at a, place other than the stand authorised by the City Corporation. A plea of not guilty was entered. Mr Irwin, who appeared for defendant., said that the private bus-owners had a. feeling that they were being victimised by the City Corporation in the matter of stands. The Corporation took all the best stands themselves, and gave the private owners one on tlie east side of Queen’s Gardens. It looked as if all that private owners could do was to either take passengers to the Exhibition or give up business. He contended that tho by-law was unreasonable. and was being unreasonably applied, and ho emphasised that the Council had no right to give preference to ils own vehicles at Ihe expense of the private owner. He submitted that the by-law was ultra vires, as it gave preference to the City Council.

Mr Barrowcloiigh, who appeared for the City Corporation, said that it was not, correct to state that the Council had given preference to its own buses ns far as stands were concerned. The first application that private owners had made for a stand was on December 10th, and everything had been dono to meet their request. Defendant was convicted without penalty. In a case in which Stanley Caird was charged with playing for hire on a stand reserved for timetable buses, the Magistrate reserved his decision. BANKING DIPLOMA. WELLINGTON, January 13.
