£1,500 JEWEL THEFT
LONDON, November 28
Edith Neale, 36. was charged at Marlborough street yesterday with stealing on November 1 a jewel case containing five platinum bracelets, five platinum rings, three platinum and diamond brooches, two pairs of earrings, a platinum searf-pin set with diamonds, and other articles, valued at £1,500, belonging to her employer, Mrs Margaret Crane, of Mount street, Mayfair.
A detective said that when he stopped her in Charing Cross road on Saturday she denied she was the wanted woman. She was taken to the police station, and before she was told she would be detained she said: “I may as well tell you that I am Edith Neale, who took a situation at Mount street. I admit T had the jewellery hut a man made me do it. T won’t tell you anything about him or myself.” Mr Can eel lor, ihe magistrate: How long was she in this situation as housemaid?
The Detective: Three days. She also said, “ He has made me do this on and off for the past two years.” It was stated that tliero would ho further charges and the woman was remanded in custody.
WOMAN SILK SMUGGLER. LONDON, November 23. Natalie Enos, 45, described as an American citizen, with a costumier’s business at 30, South street, W.. was at Westminster yesterday ebarged with concealing silk goods with intent to avoid payment of duty. An Excise officer said that Enos arrived at Victoria Station from Paris on Sunday evening, and presented two packages for clearance. She said sho had nothing to declare. The silk goods found consisted of a dressing gown, two dresses, 18 pairs of stockings—some had been put in shoes ■—two blouses, three hags, three hats, a. costume, an umbrella and a pair of shoes. Mr Boyd (the Magistrate): Do you want to explain why some of the articles were'found in your shoes? Enos : 1 cannot think why I did it; it is entirely contrary to my ideals. Elios was ordered to pay £350 14s 6d double value and duty, with ilie alternative of two months’ imprisonment.
