PROTEST AGAINST EVIDENCE
ROTORUA. January 8. Much feeling is being shown here in respect of a sentence given a returned soldier, Tod Burns, who pleaded guilty to a charge of being drunk.and disorderly on New Year’s Eve. by Mr H. MacDonald, J.P. Burns was a first offender. He was seiiflling with a man named Murray who also pleaded guilty. His opponent was lined £2. A meeting was called by the R.S.A. and was very largely attended last night. ft was nddresed by the Mayor (C. B. Clinkhard). Rev. J. Allen, and Captain Sumner, and then passed a resolution of protest, which was wired to the Minister for Justice. Burns, who was severely wounded in the war. loses his pension through the conviction.
■i A SENSATIONAL LEAP. f CHRISTCHURCH. January 8. ' A sensational leap from the third i storey window of the Dominion Hotel was made by a man who was interrupted while going through the bedroom at six o’clock- to-night. When accosted by the licensee the man raised the window and jumped, landing on his hands and knees on a grass plot. To the surprise of his pursuers, lie got to his feet, and made off. hut lie was captured by detectives. When examined by the police at the station, lie was bleeding from the face, hut had no sign of other injury. About Cl is missing from the hold rooms. The man. was sent, to the hospital, and he later will appear at the court on a theft charge. WELLINGTON MYSTERY. GIRL FOUND HANGING. WELLINGTON. Jan. 8. The dead body of a well-dressed girl, about 18 years of age, was found on the floor of the Blue Platter Tea Rooms, at Island Bay. The premises at present are iintenantod. ft is presumed that the girl got into the house by climbing through one 'if the windows and hanged herself two days ago. The rope used had apparently heen broken, for a portion 'Hw found on the floor. The noos"as around the girl’s neck. .No one saw the girl enter the fnnl !■ ing. As many people arc in the vicinity during the day, it is presumed
that she entered under the cover of darkness. No one is reported missing, and nothing found on the body discloses her identity. SAMOAN HURRICANE. AUCKLAND. Jan. 8. Auckland advices state that the Samoan hurricane will reduce the eopi i output tor the year by two thousand tons. The cocoa plantations have been seriouslv damaged. Evansdale. when riding a motor cycle at Warrington last night, collided with the express from the north, hut received only slight injuries to the knees, lie was picked up and attended to by Hoy Scouts travelling in the train and taken to Dunedin Hospital. (lutlia Edward Tapp, a farmer of Glenoiiiaru. a married man with a grown-up family, met with a shooting accident on December 29th. He was out with a shooting and fishing party and went off alone into the hush and later was found in an unconscious state shot through the month, lie was taken to Dunedin Hospital where he now lies in an improved condition. Tapp said he had been taking a shot at a rabbit when the accident occurred.
