NEAV THEORY OF LIGHT. XEAY YORK, December 30.
Dr Charles St. John, at Kansas City, declared the world was on the threshold of a super-Einstein theory, which would he as startling as the Einstein theory was compared with the previously accepted views. Dr St. John, following on Dr Miller’s claim to ha\c discovered the falsity of the first part oT the Einstein theory, announced to-day that experiments he has been conducting at Mount AVilson simultaneously with those of Dr Miller, gave results strictly according with Einstein’s, thus tending to uphold the Einstein theory. Dr Aliller and Dr St. John, who are close friends, were asked how they could reconcile the wide differences in the results of tlieir experiments. Dr St. John replied: “T do not believe the results can be reconciled, either on the basis of the Eeinstoiu theory or by throwing that theory overboard. 1 believe that the solution will come in _ a new theory. It will start with the Einstein theory and go farther. There is no reason for believing tile Einstein theory is a final thing in our concept u f flic universe. Science is faced today with another conflict, iust as big as that between my results and Miller's. It is over the nature of light. One set of experiments shows conclusively that light consists of waves. Another set shows equally conclusively that light is composed of particles known as “ quanta.” Now light cannot consist of Loth. Therefore it must be that there is some truth in each concept and the world must, wait until a genius combines them into a correct view. A similar reconciliation is possible between - Einsteins theory and .Miller’s findings.
