During the New Year holidays burglars entered the offices of Packer and Jones, builders and timber merchants, Churchill Street, and attempted to blow up the safe. By smashing a, window at the rear of the place, the intruders made their way to the Manager’s office, and ramming gelignite into a keyhole they made a clumsy and unsuccessful attempt to hurst it open. The only damage done to the safe was a fairly deep dent on the side, and the shattering of the door handle and fittings. The discovery was made this morning when the office was re-opened after the holidays. As the. office was closed since Thursday, it is not known what night the robbers made their attempt. FIRE AT DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, January 4. A fire broke out in a China warehouse in Maelaggan Street, to-night, owned by Langley and Son. The outbreak was confined to the pac king room where considerable damage was done. The fire brigade effected a good save. 1 lie insurances are not available and Mr Langley is unable to give an estimate of the damage.

He is progressing favourably. Mrs Ivy Kidlip, Belleknowes. was admitted to the hospital yesterday, suffering from lacerated wounds to the head. It was stated that the injured woman was driving a car near Taicii Mouth, when the ear skidded, throwing her heavily on to the road. The hospital authorities report that her condition is not serious.
