SMUGGLED OSPREY PLUMES.
LONDON, October 19. At Mnrylebono Police Court yesterday Isaac Manasseh, 42, a man of colour, described as a merchant, of 40, York-street, Baser street, AV.. was charged on remand with knowingly harbouring 325 bundles of osprey plumage valued at more than £1,550. The court was informed that the plumage, the import of which is prohibited. was found concealed in the false bottom of a wooden case which arrived at Tilbury from. Calcutta. Manasseh declared that he was the innocent receiver of the case and had no idea that it contained anything but a screen and some china. The magistrate (Mr Wilberforce) imposed a fine of £SO, and, addressing a solicitor who appeared for the Customs authorities said he hoped it would be found possible, in view of the poverty of the Exchequer, to dispose of the plumage, for "which, he understood, there was a market in Paris.
