TfMARU, January 5. Obituary.—Dr George Edward On bites, aged 58 years.

YACHT WRECKED. AUCKLAND, January 4. The local vaclit, Sea- A\ olf, one ot the fourteen-footer class, was dashed to pieces on the rocks off Maiheko Island. The Sou Wolf capsized in a heavy sea, and F. Clarkson, the owner, and his crew of two were plunged in the water. Their plight was noticed by a passing launch, and a difficult rescue was effected in the rough weather. Ihe three rescued men were then taken to Aknron Bay. The vaeht has been broken up on the rocky shore.

FIVE ARRESTS MADE

CHRISTCHURCH, January 5. In connection with the recent alleged burglaries the police made five arrests j yesterday of Charles Stanley Dell and Frederick Logie for alleged breaking and entering a shop; Frederick Augustus Armitage, 36, Walter Eraser Sherriff Harneiss, 33 and Joseph H°S an Byrne, 49, on two charges. Other charges are pending against the las three and bail was refused. It is understood that gelignite and tools were found in a house occupied by these three.

WEST COAST PIONEER’S DEATH. WESTPORT, January 5. Peter Harder, aged 83, died to-flay. Ho was an old and respected AYest Coaster who crossed Arthur’s Pass about 60 years ago. He landed at Lyttelton from the ship Amour m 1863.
