Allen Lawson, thirty-eight, of AVellington, was drowned in Drydon Bay. Queen Charlotte Sound, on Tuesday. Lawson went out alone in a dinghy. The boat was found drifting with his coat and hat. Letters in his pocket showed his intention to commit suicide. The body lias not been recovered. CYCLIST INJURED. CHRISTCHURCH, January 2. DEATH TN AN" HOTEL. DDNEDTX. Jan. I. An inquest on John Murphy, who died at the Empire Hotel, was held Yesterday. Evidence showed that deceased in the early morning complained to the licensee of pains in the abdomen. He had Iteen given some brandy, and later had requested the porter to procure medicine from a chemist, which he had taken. A little later the licensee found deceased lying in a passage. A doctor was sent for, but the man expired shortly after his arrival. The coroner found that deceased died from heart failure, as a result of acute abdominal trouble, the nature of which could not he determined without a postmortem examination. The evidence had shown that deceased had not been drinking at the hotel. The coroner commented on the Tact that the _ licensee had not called a doctor earlier. It is possible that it, would not have saved the man’s life, but it was unfortunate that nothing further was done for deceased.

IJEG BROKEN BY FIREWORKS. DUNEDTX. Jan. 1. Last night at the Exhibition during a display of fireworks, a projectile from a large spectacular piece struck a pile of bombs, near which one of the Exhibition carpenters was, standing. The explosion which ensued broke his leg. Edward Lomas, who was engaged in connection with the fireworks display at tlie Exhibition on Thursday night, sustained a- fractured leg through a rocket explosion. He was removed to the hospital, where his leg was amputated.

DUNEDIN, Jan. 1. | Agnes Elizabeth Patrick, a widow, [ aged 09 years, who resided at 78 Colombo Street, Christchurch, and who ; arrived in Dunedin on December 19, died in a. private hospital here at 8.45 a.m. to-day. She bad been to I’ortobello, and arrived here on December 24. and when stepping off a ’bus she fell, and it is thought broke the pelvis bone.
