The rise of the Avon resulted in putting out of action the power station at Warwick, which, owing to the absence of the electric light, was thrown into darkness, while the trams were brought to a. standstill. Business in tho shops is hampered. The main roads are impassible. Several other rivers overflowed their hanks and caused extensive damage, especially to houses in the lowlying disof .Monmouth, East Bristol, Cardiff, East Devon. Germany is still affected by the

floods which are reported all over the Continent and chronicled records show the rivers rose 31} feet above normal. The water reached the third floor of some houses bordering the rivers. Traffic and business at the market was suspended. Quantities of furniture and other wreckage are swirling down the streams. The losses are estimated at millions of marks. AMEBSTERDAM, January ‘2. Their Majesties visited the inundated regions in a boat, followed by a second boat loaded with foodstuffs for distribution to the population. The whole region between the rivers Meuse and Waal are at present flooded. Military police in boats arc rescuing peasant families from the attics of the farm houses. The roads and railway dykes arc crowded with people who fled from their houses, leaving all their property behind. The level of the Reuse and Rhine has risen another twenty inches during the last twenty-four hours. The streets of Venlo are flooded -101 inches deep. Utrecht is under water.
